The spirit of music was introduced to me at a young age via the radio, which I have always considered the most perfect conduit to share the musical experience. Unlike music videos and concert performances, radio still involves the listener’s imagination – something most adults have stored away like a favorite childhood toy which society has said we are too grown up to enjoy. We listen, we interpret, and we give meaning and pictures to what we hear emanating from the radio based on our individual life experience.

That is the spirit and the power of radio as I see it. It brings this offering of music and lyrics, descending magically from the heavens (airwaves) into the collective consciousness and touches each individual soul differently, not unlike the religious words, of the faceless prophets on which civilizations have been built and destroyed for centuries. 

Musical taste, like religious ideology varies widely across the world but while wars are waged and fought over religion, the spirit of radio and its message of music and lyrics can provide a common ground among a world of conflicting views.

Radio is not what it used to be. It has been swallowed up in this 24-hour sound bite corporate culture, but thankfully the Buggles were not as prophetic as we thought they were when they debuted a muscic video about the demise of radio to christen a new cable station called MTV. The Buggles are gone, and for the most part so is MTV as it first appeared, but the spirit of radio endures.

I have included just a few songs below, which celebrate the power and spirit of radio.

All I really need to know, I learned from the Godfather and Godfather II.

The most important of these cinema taught lessons was that you don’t side against your family with people outside of your family. You can disagree and argue with family all you want in private, but not in public and no matter how much you feel short-changed or mistreated by a family member, you don’t align yourself with a non-family member or entity to try and right a perceived wrong by your family.  Nothing good can come out of it if you do. This opens the door of opportunity for the non-family member to take advantage of this lack of family solidarity for his or her own nefarious gain.  This was nothing that my parents had not already impressed on me through the normal upbringing process.  However, it obviously had more of a lasting effect seeing it portrayed large on the screen than anything my parents could have taught me by example.

In the Godfather, Vito Corleone and his inner circle meet with Sollozzo, the head off another organized crime family, who wants to the Corleone family to get into the narcotics business so that this other crime family can leverage the Corleone’s political influence to their own advantage. Vito Corleone turns him down.  However, his son Santino (Sonny) opens his mouth during the meeting showing a division between what he thinks and what his father thinks. Vito Corleone abruptly cuts him off before he can say too much, but the damage is done. Sollozo has noticed this subtle division.

After the meeting, Vito Corleone reprimands his son:

“Santino! Come here. What’s the matter with you? I think your brain’s going soft with all that comedy you’re playing with that young girl. Never tell anyone outside the Family what you’re thinking again! Go on.”

Shortly afterwards, Vito Corleone is gunned down by the Sollozo family in an attempt to eliminate what stands between them and their desire to capitalize on the Corleone political influence by taking advantage of the subtle disagreement in philosophy between Vito and Sonny Corleone.

Fredo Corleone, the older brother of Michael Corleone, feels slighted and passed over all of his life.  Having been a sick and weak child throughout life, he has been passed over and neglected by his parents in favor of his younger brother Michael who steps up to fill Vito Corleone ’s shoes as head of the family when his father is incapacitated after the attempt on his life by the Sollozo family.

In Godfather II, Fredo betrays Michael and the family in attempt to finally get something for himself.  Tired of getting short changed, Fredo makes a deal with forces outside the family, which almost results in Michael being assassinated by rival families.

Once again, the cost of going against the family with outside forces or individuals, regardless of the motivations or intentions carries a heavy price.  Michael disowns Fredo and cuts him off from the family. He forbids Fredo from visiting their mother, unless he gives Michael a day’s notice so he can be gone when Fredo comes.

Michael delivers instructions that nothing is to happen to Fredo as long as their mother is alive.  However, we all know, that their mother will not live forever. When their mother dies, Fredo must pay for his disloyalty to the family.  He is shot and killed on orders from Michael while fishing.

Of course these outcomes are cinematic hyperbole.  In life, family betrayal is usually handled with a strongly worded e-mail or a heated exchange of words that makes all subsequent family gathering a little uncomfortable.

But dramatic effect aside, most families have a Fredo – One member who just never can be in sync with the rest of the family. Sometimes, the reasons may be apparent. Maybe he was raised by different parents due to divorce, or he had a harder upbringing compared to later siblings because the economics of the family improved over time, or he had less parental interaction, because by the time he came around, the parents were more hands-off, or too exhausted from working multiple jobs to keep the family together and supplied with the essentials.

Other times, the causes may not be so obvious. What about the child who is raised by the same parents, and given the same amount of love and affection and necessities in life? Yet, he turns out to be a Fredo. He bites the hand that feeds him, never grateful for the sacrifices made on his behalf by both parents and siblings. He grows up with the idea that he is entitled to receive more from life than he has contributed, sneering down at the work ethic by which he and the rest of the family were raised, as if it were a hideous blemish that may expose his humble beginnings. So this Fredo goes through life trying to run from his own history in the hopes of changing it to something more deserving in his eyes. He marches through life to the beat of a different drummer, but tragically, this drummer has no rhythm. As a result, this journey is an never ending escape, filled with poor judgments, and decisions fueled by a desire to prove something to a family that never required this elusive validation in the first place.

Just as my parents impressed upon me the importance of family sticking together and being there for each other, I have tried to teach my kids the same value. Sadly, I have to admit that this is a challenging work in progress. I may just have to sit them down and have a family screening of the Godfather and Godfather II and hope that even in this day of wall to wall violence and carnage on TV along with the hate filled, backstabbing, Fredo like characters that permeate the monstrosity known as “reality” TV that it will have the same moral teaching effect that it had on me when I first viewed it so many years ago. If not, maybe I will take them fishing, for added dramatic emphasis and to encourage their appreciation of family unity.

An Ode to Fredo for all of those Fredos and potential Fredos that still have time to do the right thing.

 Word Problem:

The economy has been battered beyond recognition for many Americans.  Homes, jobs, and retirement savings have been lost at record levels.

Person A holds multiple jobs just to make ends meet and relates her story to President A at a town hall meeting.  Four years later, Person B has been forced to move into her car while awaiting public housing assistance and relates her story to President B at a town hall meeting.

Who will receive assistance quicker?

A. Person A
B. Person B
C. Both Person A and Person B will receive assistance in an equal amount of time.
D. Shut the hell up, I trying to watch the American Idol on the Tee Vee machine.

Answer: B.  Person B

What a difference four years can make in the level of compassion and decency exhibited by our leaders.  However, we still have a huge mess to clean up or we won’t make it here anymore.

Opening Bookend 

There couldn’t have been a better demonstration of the American people’s rejection of the illegitimacy and the colossal failure of the Geore W. Bush presidency and the damage it inflicted than the two significant but sparsely covered events that bookend his eight year reign.

The opening bookend was in January of 2001 at his first inauguration whenThe People came in huge numbers, lined the motorcade route, and told the world in their loudest most angry  and certain voices, that they did not accept George W. Bush’s rule.

The People, who were not blinded by party alliance, knew voters had been illegally removed from the voter rolls in order to eliminate the voters most likely to vote against Bush. They also knew a heavily partisan Supreme Court appointed  Bush to the office of President against the will of the people. They knew that he had cheated to gain this office and they were determined not to stand by in silence.

The entire motorcade protest aired on C-Span as it happened live. C-Span, to its credit, covered the protest in its entirety without pundit commentary to cloud the interpretation of the symbolism of the event. Viewers were able to see with their own eyes and hear with their own ears, the motorcade route packed with angry citizens of all ages, races, and walks of life, waving signs and screaming to the world to express their rejection of this leader that had been forced upon them.

it was a powerful mandate that The People knew what they did last November and they were not going to stand for it.  

There was a sliver of hope at that time that it would effect some type of change, or a reversal of the election. At the very least, there was the thought that any human with any ounce of decency or honor would have accepted this overwhelming rejection by The People and walked away in defeat, his head bowed in shame, realizing he had not achieved the highest office in the country from the will of the people. The world soon tragically discovered that honor and decency were not in the make up of George W. Bush’s character.

Unfortunately, this massive protest was seen by only a few because the networks and cable giants neglected to cover it. Everyone knows, if the news organizations don’t report something, then it never happened and history and reality disappear down the memory hole. However, a brief clip of this rejection of Bush by the The People did end up in Fahrenheit 911 (refer to the link at the beginning of this post) to be seen by a larger audience and to be saved for posterity.

Closing Bookend

 The closing bookend to George W. Bush’s presidency occurred on November 4, 2008, as The People surrounded the White House celebrating not just Barack Obama’s victory in the election, but the end to eight years of Bush’s disastrous reign over America and the world. The pundits tried to spin this symbolic event as just a victory celebration for Obama, where the celebration became the story as opposed to what was being celebrated. However, America and the world knew it was much more than that. The People were ecstatic that a person never invited into the White House (The People’s House), would now be evicted from that house.

If history does not betray the truth, as it so often does, these bookends will succinctly sum up the overall unpopular and unwelcome presidential legacy of George W. Bush.

The C-word is dangerous.  It will stop normally rational thinking people in their tracks and make them turn and flee for the edge of the nearest cliff with the rest of the lemmings. The connotations associated with the C-word have the power to make you abandon logic, reason, and truth and cower to those who will use the C-word or the suggestion of it to mock and silence a truth their own minds are too feeble to comprehend. It is a very strong word, and that is why people with an insatiable hunger to hold onto power use it as a club when the facts are not in their arsenal. Don’t be afraid of the C-word. Embrace it. Bush drops the C-Bomb to preemptively silence the masses.

Like father, like son – Bush Sr. drops a C-Bomb of his own to remind everyone that  critical thought and questioning will not be tolerated by the powers that be, even for the grandaddy of all conspiracies.
